Jim Mallonee can tell you a thing or two about the music business. A brief glimpse at the track record of artists he has booked shows for throughout his 30 year career reveals some of the biggest marquee names in the industry, including John Mayer, Jack Johnson, Alan Jackson, Sheryl Crow, Bob Dylan, Dave Matthews Band, No Doubt, Jimmy Buffett, the Killers, and more.
As the current Vice President of Southeast Booking for Live Nation Worldwide/House of Blues Entertainment, Mallonee oversees the talent booking for nine Live Nation venues, including House of Blues Orlando, The Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA, and The Fillmore’s Miami, FL and Charlotte, NC locations. As if that weren’t enough to keep him busy, he is also the prime talent buyer for House of Blues Orlando, House of Blues Myrtle Beach, and St. Augustine Amphitheater, as well as for a variety of annual festival shows.
Mallonee recently visited Full Sail to share his years of stories and experiences with students, as well as offer up his insight as to emerging trends in a business that has been in a state of constant evolution over the past decade. During his presentation in the Entertainment Business Auditorium, he touched on a variety of topics, including some of the unique challenges that could only happen in the ever-random business of live concerts and show promotion.
He also gave students advice about how to break into the business after graduating from Full Sail, listing some of the specific things he looks for in a new hire – as well as a guideline of what not to say in an interview. Following his presentation, Mallonee answered questions from students during an open Q&A session.
