Just Launched: Graphic Design Grad Rebeca Mahler

In FSBlog’s Just Launched feature, we talk to brand new Full Sail graduates, right out of the door from graduation, about what’s next for them as they head out into the workforce. This month’s Just Launched graduate is Rebeca Mahler.

Name: Rebeca Mahler

Degree Program: Graphic Design (Online)

Graduation Date: April 4, 2014

First Job: I started last month as a Graphic Designer at Smart Girls at the Party, a social-culture website founded by comedian Amy Poehler. The site encourages women to be themselves, get involved with their community, and engage in learning experiences around the world. The first thing I worked on was redesigning their logo and I’m going to be working soon on their branding campaign. I’ll also be designing their website and the graphics that they use for stories and social media campaigns.

How You Got Your Foot in the Door: I moved to Austin, Texas, from Ohio a few months ago with the hopes of finding a job. Smart Girls posted an opening for this job through Austin’s local AIGA chapter and I applied. The interview process took about four months.

Before Graduation: This is my very first design job, and this is awesome. I knew [after school] that I definitely wanted to focus on graphic design, either web or print. And one of the things that was important to me was doing something that would be of value to society. I was really happy when I found Smart Girls because they’re doing exactly what I want to do.

Career Goals: My goal at Smart Girls is to create graphics that will help people change the way they think. For me it’s not about becoming a Creative Director, it’s about doing something meaningful with my craft. I want to hopefully make the world a better place, as corny as that sounds, that’s my ultimate goal.
