In FSBlog’s Just Launched feature, we talk to brand new Full Sail graduates, right out of the door from graduation, about what’s next for them as they head out into the workforce. This month’s Just Launched graduate is Mark Diaz.
Name: Mark Diaz
Degree Program: Game Development
Graduation Date: May 9, 2014
Getting his foot in the door with id Software: I was doing well academically so I started talking to Rob Coble (Career Development Advisor for Game Studies) early and he put me in touch with id Software‘s HR manager because I told him they were one of my dream companies. They saw my resume and decided to let me take their test. I knocked it out of the park, then everything evolved from there. I had a phone interview, then an on-site interview, and then got the job.
His position at the company: I just know it’ll be a lot of learning right away. I’m really looking forward to that, and getting caught up on what all the systems in the game engine do. Hopefully I can work closely with the engine because that’s what I really want to get into – graphics and engine programming. I just love the process of game development, and all their franchises were hallmarks of my childhood.
First stepping foot inside the legendary studio: When they gave me the tour they had a trophy wall that started in the lobby and extended downstairs to different levels. It had awards and memorabilia and all sorts of fan stuff – that was so exciting to me. They even had the toy shotgun that they modeled the original Doom shotgun off of when they were developing it in the 90s. It was surreal, and I don’t think I’m going to be able to believe that I’m working there until I’ve been there for a year or so. I always considered id Software a place that I would like to end up at someday after I had some experience, and can’t believe I’m already there.
