In FSBlog’s Just Launched feature, we talk to brand new Full Sail graduates, right out the door from graduation, about what’s next for them as they head out into the workforce. This month’s Just Launched graduate is Gwendolyn Schwartzkopf.
Name: Gwendolyn Schwartzkopf
Degree Program: Computer Animation
Graduation Date: June 27, 2014
First Job: I started earlier this month [Monday, July 7] as a design intern at Red Door Interactive, an advertising agency in San Diego, California, that helps better brands from multiple standpoints – marketing, advertising, media planning, SEO, social media, user experience, website development, and more. My job will consist of developing and creating visual solutions for brands.
How You Got Your Foot in the Door: I got the internship through a pretty standard application and interview process. I had my professional website and digital portfolio already assembled 5 months before my expected graduation. (Besides classwork, I worked as a freelance graphic designer while in school; working with several non-profits on logos, branding, and miscellaneous advertisement needs.) I think it’s important to be ready prior to finals because had I not been prepared I wouldn’t have had enough time to properly display and pitch myself as an artist. I would have lost this amazing opportunity.
Before Graduation: My heart has always belonged to the arts, and I knew if I wanted to revolve my career around the arts and be successful I needed to follow the modern era. I obtained a certificate in Graphic Design & Advertising while in high school and then decided to go even deeper into the digital world by exposing myself to 3D arts [and enrolling in Full Sail’s Computer Animation program]. By expanding my education in traditional, digital, and 3D arts I hope I’ve made myself a strong and desirable asset for companies.
Down the Road: Within a year, I hope to have either nailed a full-time position with Red Door Interactive as a designer or be working for another advertising agency … hopefully one that reflects the same values and creative community as RDI. I’ve always had an interest in working as a designer for an action sports brand like Transworld. I have a love for the arts and living an active lifestyle, so working as a designer for a sports brand would be my way of combining my two passions.
