As of January 2016, Full Sail is now a proud host to a chapter of the Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers (SMPTE). Film Production MFA Course Director Dino Gallina is the current sponsor for the chapter, and encourages film students to join and participate in their events.
“There are many values [in joining the chapter] including leading-edge industry knowledge, understanding of the technology that supports the motion picture and television industry, access to valuable industry news and trends, participation in SMPTE events, networking opportunities with industry pros, among several others,” said Dino.
The organization currently consists of about 25 Full Sail student members, but the chapter meetings are open for all students to attend and membership is not required to participate in the campus events. By registering through the SMPTE website, students can receive their first year of membership for free. Benefits include a subscription to monthly e-newsletters, access to the print and online version of the SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal, discounts on SMPTE and select conferences, and more. After the first year, membership dues are only $10 for the year.
“At the meetings and events we cover standards, practices and technology related to motion pictures and television,” said Dino.
The chapter uses Facebook to communicate with the Full Sail SMPTE members, so be sure to check their page regarding news and upcoming meetings.
