Benn and EBMS Program Director Ron Cook onstage at Full Sail Live.
With Orlando Calling right around the corner, there has been a definite buzz about festivals permeating throughout the Central Florida music community. And when it comes to the business of organizing and throwing some of the planet’s most well-known festival events, there are few entities that can hold a candle to UK promoter Festival Republic.
Festival Republic has been responsible for the Reading & Leeds Festival, The Big Chill, Ireland’s Big Picnic, and Berlin Festival, and they’re also the team behind the upcoming Orlando Calling. Full Sail recently welcomed Festival Republic Managing Director Melvin Benn to campus to talk to students and faculty about the world of event production, music festivals, and booking/promotion.
Benn has built a name for himself in the show production world, having grown some of the most internationally recognized festival names from the ground up. During his presentation in the Full Sail Live Venue, Benn spoke about his personal history as a music fan and concert-goer, and shared how he was able to translate his passion into his career. Benn also talked about his experiences in taking over the operational management at Glastonbury Festival and his efforts to instill an environmentally conscientious approach to live events (Norway’s Hove Festival is the first carbon neutral festival in Scandinavia).
Following his presentation, students were able to learn more about Festival Republic and Benn’s career during an open Q&A session. Interested students got a chance to learn about exclusive Full Sail-only volunteer opportunities at the Orlando Calling festival. Orlando Calling will take place over November 12 and 13 at the Citrus Bowl and will feature performances by the Killers, the Racnonteurs, Kid Rock, Pixies, Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band, the Avett Brothers, the Roots, and more.
