Every Friday, we’ll have blog, photo, and video updates from Maggie Ward, the Full Sail New Media Journalism Master’s graduate who is interning on this summer’s Vans Warped Tour. This week, Maggie tells us about her first week on tour.
Filming and photographing at Warped Tour has, so far, been a completely new experience for me. Prior to heading out on this tour, I was a children’s photographer at a large chain of portrait studios. 80% of the people I photographed were under the age of two. When interviewing for this Warped Tour position, I mentioned the similarity between two year olds and punk bands. Both are all over the place when you are trying to photograph them and both and get a bit wild and crazy and emotional. Maybe it’s not all that new of an experience after all.

Still, despite the apparent similarities, there was not much I could do to prepare. I feel like my learning curve is straight up and down. I had my first real shoot last Saturday in Portland, Oregon, with Eric Teti from PropertyOfZack. We started with letlive on the Monster Energy stage, followed by The Chariot, and I See Stars. The musicians are wonderfully passionate about the work they do, and it is marvelous to have the opportunity to capture their performances on video. Videos of our work will be popping up on PropertyOfZack.com throughout the entire tour, so feel free to keep an eye out for some amazing performances.
I have yet to meet a single person I do not like. Waiting for lunch and dinner has been the best chance to meet interesting people, and whether you’re a videographer, band member, sound technician, or water slide operator, you are treated with love and respect.
I could not have asked for a better group of people to share a bus. There are 17 people on our bus, and we are packed in here like sardines. Our eclectic group of people consists of three Full Sail interns, sponsors from the Insidious 2 tent, Heart Support, Event Water Solutions, and more. We all work hard to help each other, and even though most of us have never been on Warped Tour, we all understand that stress that can occur on our bus and will do whatever it takes to keep a happy and healthy environment.
Warped Tour 2013 has only just begun. I cannot imagine where this experience will take me in the coming weeks, but I am looking forward to shooting some amazing footage and photography, and seeing where the experience can point me in the years to come.
