An integral part of the Florida Film Festival every year is the handful of industry-related forums that complement the week’s movie screenings, special events, and parties. Notable filmmakers, screenwriters, and other industry execs travel to Central Florida from all over the country to take part in them.
“The forums are a great opportunity for our students to interact and learn from industry professionals on a wide range of subject matters,” says Full Sail Film program director Anne Watters. “And best of all, they’re free!”
Here’s a quick look at what’s on the agenda for this week:
- Today: The unique challenges for women who want to break into the film business will be discussed this morning (11 a.m.) at the Enzian during “Perseverance: Women in the Industry.” On the panel: actress/director Shannah Laumeister, editor Sabine Hoffman, shorts filmmaker Lauren Wolkstein, and Full Sail’s own Anne Watters. It will be moderated by Sylvia Caminer, the director/producer of the Rick Springfield documentary An Affair of the Heart, a featured film in this year’s festival.
- Tomorrow: Through their advertising company New Think Creative, industry vets Janet Lyons and Mike Campbell have successfully promoted three films from Bob Berney’s FilmDistrict company: Insidious, Soul Surfer, and The Rum Diary. Thursday morning (11 a.m.) at the Enzian they’ll share the case study from the recent success of the horror film Insidious during the “How to Turn Small Movies Into Big Box Office Successes” forum.
- Friday: “The Agony and the Ecstasy of the Screenwriter in Today’s Hollywood” (at the Enzian at 11 a.m.) will include screenwriters Barry Sandler, Mike Werb, Don Mancini, and Justin Lader discussing the challenges and rewards of screenwriting in today’s day and age. Then, over at the Regal Winter Park Village at 2 p.m., the “Filmmaker’s Forum” will give the public an opportunity to pick the brains of some of the filmmakers that have had their worked featured in this year’s festival.
