Many people think getting a job as a QA [quality assurance] tester at a game studio means nothing but playing video games all day, but it’s way more than that. The job requires patience, strong analytical skills, a knack for thinking outside the box, and more. And while it’s one of the most common ways for recent grads to break into the game industry, don’t think you’re going to just sit around mindlessly playing your favorite game.
“People a lot of times perceive that, ‘Oh, I’m going to get paid to play games,’ but [QA testing is] much more of the engineering-type position,” says John Erskine, Director of Studio Operations for Cloud Imperium Games. “The process of testing is really about analyzing, looking for flaws, and then being able to reproduce those flaws in a way that makes it so that an engineer can identify the root cause and fix it. There’s a lot of analytical talent that’s required.”
