Spotted on Campus: AWOLNATION’s Kenny Carkeet

Recording Arts and Show Production students in the Introduction to Music Business course got some real-world advice straight from the source yesterday when Full Sail grad Kenny Carkeet stopped by campus. The Recording Arts and Entertainment Business grad (and Orlando native) was in town between stops touring as the rhythm guitar player/keyboardist of the successful indie rock band, AWOLNATION.

Shortly after graduating from Full Sail in 2007, Kenny sold everything and moved to California to pursue a career as an engineer. After accepting every job he could find, he linked up with AWOLNATION’s lead singer, Aaron Bruno, and the two wrote the song, “Sail,” which has since gone double platinum. The band signed to Red Bull Records and has spent the last several months touring Europe and the States.

Kenny, who has engineering credits on most of the songs on AWOLNATION’s debut record Megalithic Symphony, spoke to the class about the importance of being where the industry is, having a positive attitude, and accepting every job that comes your way, even if it involves working long hours and not getting paid much.

“If you want to do something, you have to go and get it,” Kenny said.

AWOLNATION will spend the summer playing various festivals across the country before embarking on a headlining tour this fall (which includes an Orlando stop at the House of Blues on October 25). In between playing festivals, Kenny will be in Los Angeles working on personal music and engineering projects. Check out AWOLNATION’s music video for “Sail” below.
