Ask Shamus McGlynn the secret to his success and he’d share with you just one word: persistence. When the Computer Animation grad set his sights on working at Zoic Studios, a visual effects company based in Culver City, CA, he decided he wouldn’t take no for an answer.
“I applied to Zoic Studios’ intern program two or three times before I was accepted into it,” Shamus says. “Then once I was in, I just tried to spend as much time in the studio as possible trying to find anything I could do to help out.”
His tenacity eventually paid off when he caught the attention of one of the producers, who had him work on almost all of the models used in the show Vegas. “At the end of the internship, all my hard work was recognized when I was selected as Zoic’s Intern Scholar for my session. This came with a contract offer to work at the studio, which is where I’m at now.”
These days, his job responsibilities center around anything related to modeling and texture painting. “This can range from starting in the design process all the way to the finished model, or receiving a model or texture that needs to be up-rezzed, or creature high-res sculpts in Zbrush using existing models.”
Shamus isn’t surprised he ended up in this field. “Ever since I was little and playing with clay in my first grade art classroom, I’ve wanted to go into some sort of artistic field and this has been my opportunity to really turn that dream into a career,” says Shamus, who’s favorite project so far was the television advertisement he created for the Halo game series. “But the appeal of this work for me really comes from being around and working with some of the most creative and talented people I have ever met.”
