Rapper Riff Raff aka Jody Highroller visited Full Sail in January to give students insight into his success, and offer some advice to those looking to make it in the entertainment industry. Students from the Entertainment Business programs – and many others – packed the Entertainment Business auditorium to hear what the eccentric artist had to say.
The multi-millionaire is no stranger to the hustle; he began making homemade CDs in 2005, and he said one of the most important things he learned from those early days was learning how to interact and work with people. In 2015 he released his second studio album Peach Panther.
“Make your goals and knock them out one by one. Don’t just say ‘I want to own a Lamborghini’; what are the steps you’re going to take to get there? You need to have a plan and a strategy.”
In addition to his hard-working mentality, Riff Raff attributes much of his success to following his own path and by not letting outside opinions influence his choices. Many students in attendance were looking to work on the business side of the industry, and Riff Raff explained that a successful relationship between an artist and their manager is also crucial to success.
“As the manager, you need to tell your client exactly what you’re going to do for them, know what they want, and make it happen,” he said. “If you tell your client they can’t do something, don’t just say ‘no.’ Show them where the yes is.”
