Full Sail’s online Media Design Master of Fine Arts degree is an accelerated, 12-month program for students interested in brand development and design. Split into three 4-month phases, the program covers Strategy Development, Creative Development, and Presentation and Professional Practice.
“When you come out [of the program] you’re going to know enough to pursue a Creative Director or branding executive position,” says Don Larson, the Media Design Program Director. While Don recommends some design experience before enrolling in the program, he says that some students have come in with no design background whatsoever and have done quite well.
In the Strategy Development phase, students study Brand Development and Effective Copywriting and learn how to analyze a brand. Creative Development is where the design courses come in, and students explore color, typography, image, and motion. During the Presentation and Professional Practice phase, students finish and present their Design Solution thesis project. Throughout the course of the program, students work on this thesis project – identifying a specific company’s product or service and developing it to a higher level – and they present in Month 11.
“A lot of our students are already designers and are taking the program to go further in the field,” says Don. “Some are just using the program to get in, and some are branding people who got interested in design.”
Two recent Media Design grads – Amy Jackson and Chris Tripputi – were named Students to Watch by Graphic Design USA magazine. “Students get pushed pretty hard,” says Don, “but come out with some great stuff.”
