In FSBlog’s Just Launched feature, we talk to brand new Full Sail graduates, right out the door from graduation, about what’s next for them as they head out into the workforce. This month’s Just Launched graduate is Ruben Infante.
Name: Ruben Infante
Degree Program: Recording Arts
Graduation Date: October 4, 2013
First Job: I was just hired as a Grip for the Orlando Magic. The season starts in a couple weeks, but my orientation begins Monday [yesterday]. I’ll be working on their broadcasts [for all Orlando Magic home games.] I’ll help the camera operator with setting up the equipment and managing the wires during the game. I’ll pretty much be on working on the floor during the game. If the camera operator moves around, I’ll be the eye for him. I’ll also have the opportunity to work other events at the Amway Center, including boxing matches and the upcoming NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament.
How You Got Your Foot in the Door: I went to see my Career Development advisor and we were talking basketball and he told me about a job fair for the Orlando Magic. I left there, went back home, and got online and went through the entire application process. I spent three hours putting everything together and sent in my application, then followed up with them through email. One thing led to another, and the next thing you know they were calling Career Development to get feedback on me. Then I got an interview.
Before Graduation: Just before graduation, the managers of Full Sail’s Dubbing Stage came into our class and gave us information about an internship with them. I stopped by their office for an interview and showed them some of my work, and I got the internship. I’ll be starting a six-week part-time internship this week, and I’ll be editing footage.
Down the Road: Working with the Orlando Magic is a great opportunity for me to learn. For the next year, my main concern is to get more experience. I want to beef up my resume and feel like I’m confident in every area I want to work in. I’m excited to have the opportunity to work right away and feel good about myself and not be intimidated. I’m investing in my resume.
Long-Term Goal: I want to work in post-production, my dream job would be at Lucasfilm in San Francisco. That has been the goal since day one. I want to put myself in the best situation possible to have an opportunity to work for them. Things are looking great. Because I know where I want to be makes it easy mentally. I just have to work hard and be patient.
