How Could Design Be Any Worse? Punk Rock Art And Design Event Held On Campus

As an instructor who spends time teaching students the rules and guidelines of art and design, Chris Kretzer took the time to discuss breaking these rules, and more specifically, breaking them in the name of punk rock.

As part of the Fluid Friday series, Chris hosted a seminar called “How Could Design Be Any Worse? Punk Rock Art & Design” which was open to all degree programs, and streamed live for online students.

“You have to know what you’re doing when it comes to breaking the rules,” Chris said as he talked about the history of art and design throughout iconic punk rock albums.

Beginning with early bands such as the Ramones and Sex Pistols, Chris displayed images of classic punk rock albums, and discussed the elements and commonalities typically found on album covers in this aggressive genre. Other popular bands he mentioned included Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, and Misfits, which he dubbed as the “KISS of the punk rock world” because of their ability to slap their logo on anything and everything for sale.
