Full Sail Hall of Fame graduate Sebastian Krys recently helped to organize the “Los Producers Charity Show,” a live music event that featured a cast of Latin recording artists and was co-hosted by BMI, the Harry Fox Agenecy, Lurssen Mastering, and Full Sail University. All of the night’s proceeds went toward Education Through Music – Los Angeles, a non-profit organization aimed at providing and promoting the integration of music into the curricula of disadvantaged schools in the area.
“BMI has a yearly showcase surrounding the Latin GRAMMY® Awards, and I approached them this year about turning it into a charity event,” says Sebastian. “I learned about Education Through Music from a colleague of mine, and I thought it was the perfect cause. I’m in this business in large part because the public schools I attended had music programs.”
Onstage at the Crossroads in the House of Blues in Las Vegas, performers including 2010 Latin GRAMMY® winners Alex Cuba and Chino y Nacho and Latin GRAMMY® nominees Aleks Syntek, Koko, Los Claxons, Elsten Torres, and Huey Dunbar IV improvised and collaborated in a jam session, backed by an all-star house band that included Sebastian himself.
“I play guitar, in high school I played saxophone, and in middle school I played the French horn,” he says. “I learned those instruments through public school music programs, not private lessons. So I thought it was appropriate, and fun. It’s like riding a bike! You never really forget how to play.”
The event welcomed 500 guests, including producers, executives, concert promoters, musicians, and artists. Sebastian also participated in an online auction, offering up a free recording session with the highest bidder. The organization is expecting to raise between $10,000-$15,000 through their combined efforts towards their cause.
Over the course of Sebastian’s career since graduating from Full Sail, he’s earned a total of 12 awards from NARAS – four GRAMMY® Awards and eight Latin GRAMMY® Awards, including 2007’s prestigious Latin GRAMMY® Producer of the Year. He has also worked on projects with artists such as Marc Anthony, Shakira, the Black Eyed Peas, and Will Smith.
“As I get older, I realize what a huge role education has played in my life and career. From elementary school through Full Sail, I would not be where I am today without an education,” says Sebastian. “It’s important to give back, share knowledge, and support our educators. Teachers leave an indelible mark in our lives, and they need our support now more than ever. It’s not until much later that we understand the impact that they have.”
