Pop music fans are most familiar with Duncan Sheik from his 1996 Grammy-nominated hit “Barely Breathing” – but while his name hasn’t been on the Billboard charts lately, he’s more recently channeled his skills as a singer/songwriter into a career writing compositions for both film and the Broadway stage, most notably in the Tony-winning musical Spring Awakening.
Sheik teamed with Full Sail for an intimate Q&A session at the downtown Plaza Theater (where he performed later that night). The invite-only event was offered to the top GPS performing students in Full Sail’s Entertainment Business, Music Business, Show Production, and Recording Arts degree programs.
Answering pre-written questions from students and engaging in dialogue with the 30 students in the theater, Sheik spoke about his influences as a musician, the transition from pop music to musical theater, and his take on the future of the music business. Afterwards, he invited students to stick around for sound check.
