Grammy-Winner Bruce Swedien Talks About His Career in Music
If you've heard music, you've heard Bruce Swedien's work. With a resume that lists high-profile artists like Mick Jagger, Nat King Cole, Paul McCartney, and Diana Ross, the Grammy-winning engineer/producer has had a hand in classic recordings that have helped to define the genres of pop and jazz. Oh, and Michael Jackson's 30-million selling, monumental Thriller album? Swedien recorded, mixed, and assisted in producing that, too.
Swedien recently visited Full Sail to deliver a lecture before a near-capacity crowd of students and faculty in the Full Sail Live Venue. With the stage dressed to simulate a warmer, intimate environment, Swedien talked about what he knows and loves most – music. And talk he did – over the course of three hours, the unmoderated event touched upon nearly every step of the man's lifelong career.
Students were able to ask questions throughout the presentation and interact with Swedien as he talked about his recording techniques in the studio, his philosophy and outlook on life and music, and his 20-plus year gig as the sound engineer for Michael Jackson. Throughout the event, he cued up songs that he recorded throughout his career and shared his own personal anecdotes about the session and artist.
Following his presentation, Swedien remained inside the lobby of Full Sail Live to meet with students one-on-one and sign copies of his book, In The Studio with Michael Jackson.
