Film graduate Benjamin J. McElroy recently visited campus and caught us up on his Boston-based video production company, McElroy Films. The business is the product of nearly a decade of work Benjamin building his name in the area’s media industry, following his start as a photographer for newspapers like the Boston Globe and Lowell Sun, as well as working at a video studio creating material for local colleges like MIT and Harvard.
“I really loved what I was doing, but I always wanted my own company,” he says. “Breaking off from my full time job, going out starting a business, getting clients, and now winning awards for my work – its kind of like this whole collective thing I’ve been really proud of.”
Launched full-time in 2010, McElroy Films now employs four editors, four videographers, two producers, and a sales and marketing director, with Ben splitting his time between the production and business ends. The team offers a complete range of high definition video services in house, and has picked up a number of repeat clients, as well as won accolades from both the Davey Awards and Telly Awards.
“We do everything from preproduction to post, and have had a lot of success over the past couple years,” Ben says. “Recently we’ve been working with political candidates, lots of law firms, and some big name hospitals. We’ve built a name for getting good results and being able to help guide companies as they incorporate video.”
What’s also notable with their projects is Ben’s eye for great images, and it’s not hard to see his photography background shine in their framing and camera movements. He’s quick to cite that artistry along with their dedication to client messaging as key factors in helping McElroy Films stand out in a crowded market.
“This company is really nice because we all love what we do and take a lot of pride in our products,” he says. “We’re asking people what their vision is and try to get exactly what they’re looking for – that’s where it gets fun. Everybody here is in it for one goal, to create professional video content for our clients in the Boston area.”
