Memorial Day is a day to remember soldiers who gave their lives for their country, and it’s also an opportunity for military veterans to get together, share a meal, and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow vets and friends.
To commemorate the day and celebrate our many student veterans, Full Sail is hosting a Memorial Day Block Party on campus on May 24, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event takes place on the walkway between Buildings 2 and 3, and all students and staff are invited. Entertainment will include bands, DJs, outdoor games, and prizes.
Representatives from Moe’s, Wing House, Planet Smoothie, Orlando Sport and Social, Sports Clips, YMCA, Rebounderz, and Costco will be on hand to hand out samples of food, coupons and merchandise, and local veterans organizations, such as the VFW, Veterans Affairs, and the American Legion will be participating. Full Sailors will also have the chance to check out a military truck and military equipment like Kevlar and a flak vest.
One of the veterans organizations that will be on campus for the block party is the Camaraderie Foundation, which provides counseling services to vets and their families as they transition to civilian life. The Camaraderie Foundation supports families in multiple ways, such as holding free Family Fun Days, which are outings for the whole family.
One of the Camaraderie Foundation’s newest initiatives is the Mentor Leadership Program, a 12-month program that pairs veterans or active duty servicemen with local executive mentors. Mentors introduce participants to networking events and guide them in developing job skills. The program also offers classes in resume writing, finance management, and job skills through a partnership with Fifth Third Bank and Orlando Jobs.
The Memorial Day Block Party is sponsored by the Veterans Student Union, Military Admissions, Veterans Affairs, and the Student Community Association, and is supported by Show Production and the Student Event Crew.
