Director Ann Shin Risked Arrest to Film Documentary About North Korea [Video]

In her new documentary, The Defector: Escape from North Korea, Canadian director Ann Shin flew to Northern China and went undercover to document a group of North Koreans attempting to smuggle themselves out of the country. Those who get caught defecting from the country face anywhere from five years in prison to the death penalty, so attempting to flee – all while trying to capture it on film – is a huge risk.

Our sister blog Get in Media spoke with Ann about gaining the trust of the film’s subjects, the challenges of shooting undercover, and the interactive portion of the documentary that lets viewers get a first-person look at what it’s like to be a defector.
