2013 Spike VGX Award Winners Feature Alumni Credits

2013 has been a great year for games, so picking a definitive “best” was never going to be an easy task. This year’s Spike VGX Awards put that vote in the hands of gamers, and the December 7 ceremony honored a diverse selection of the most acclaimed titles from the past 12 months.

As reported earlier, a large number of Full Sail alumni worked on the VGX nominees in art, programming, and production roles, and we kept track of the results during a live viewing party on campus. As the broadcast came to a close, four of the grad-associated titles had won awards in 10 separate categories.

Game of the Year went to Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V, the latest entry in the series that debuted in 1997. Ten graduates worked on GTA V, seven from the Game Development program, and three from Computer Animation.

The Last of Us may have been edged out for the top prize but this Playstation 3 exclusive scored the most number of awards of the night. Studio of the Year went to developers Naughty Dog, where more than a dozen alumni worked on the game. It also received Best Playstation Game, Best Voice Actor, and Best Voice Actress.

The creative first-person shooter BioShock Infinite was close behind with three awards – Best Shooter, Character of the Year, and Best Song in a Game. Three grads worked on the hit at Irrational Games, another contender for Studio of the Year.

Finally, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag took Best Action-Adventure Game. The series is known for its freedom of movement across scenic open worlds, and this latest chapter has refined and expanded that gameplay to critical acclaim. Two alumni contributed to that experience working at Ubisoft’s global studios.

The Spike VGX Awards was a good chance to look back on the biggest games of the year, while also a good primer for what’s to come in 2014 – with the show also previewing a number of future releases. The complete list of winners are as follows, with alumni credits noted. If you still have holiday shopping to do for any gamers in your life, this wouldn’t make a bad cheat sheet.
